The American Council of the Blind (ACB) traces its roots back to 1961, although several of its state affiliates and local chapters have origins dating as far back as the 1880s. Throughout its history, ACB and its affiliates have been instrumental in advocating for initiatives that have shaped the current landscape of opportunities for blind and visually impaired individuals in America. Upholding a belief in the equitable treatment of all blind persons at any stage of their adjustment to vision challenges, ACB values each individual's unique talents, capabilities, and achievements.
